ONGC needs floaters

ONGC is likely to issue tenders in the next month to re-hire or replace two ‘floaters’, according to drillers.

Among the rigs that needs to be replaced is Transocean deepwater drillship Discoverer Seven Seas, released last month (February) after finishing her three-year contract. Discoverer has moved to Singapore for repairs before heading to Indonesia for a one-year contract with Italian explorer Eni.

ONGC also wants to rehire or replace Aban Offshore’s Aban Ice, working in the western offshore at $152,000/day. Aban’s three-year contract ends in October this year but the rig could stay with ONGC until April 2013 to make up for time lost due to drilling delays.

ONGC is also likely to tender for an offshore rig on a new three-year contract to drill in water depths of up to 1000-feet (300-metres). “If ONGC wants these rigs on location before next year’s monsoon (May to September) it must issue tenders now,” says a likely bidder.

Contractors typically get six months to mobilise their rigs.
