US PRESSES BANGLADESH TO EXPORT GAS TO INDIA

Vol 3, PW 5 (31 Mar 99) News in Brief

John Holzman, US ambassador to Bangladesh, told an audience of businessmen in Dhaka last week that Bangladesh could not afford to exclude the possibility of exporting gas to neighbouring India.

Holzman hinted that foreign majors would quickly lose interest in Bangladesh if India was excluded as a market for Bangladeshi gas. Holzmans comments come days after Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and opposition leader Khaleda Zia dismissed suggestions that Bangladeshi gas would be exported.

Holzman said annual exports of gas could earn Bangladesh upwards of $450m per annum.
