Electricity reform one step closer

Vol 4, PW 14 (16 Aug 00) News in Brief

A new 'Electricity Bill, 2000' for the Indian power sector is in the final stages of preparation.

A statement to the Indian parliament said the bill, prepared by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) on behalf of the Ministry of Power, is "under discussion at various levels before finalization". The draft Bill seeks to break up India's State Electricity Boards into separate entities.

According to the power ministry, it provides "a clear delineation of roles and responsibilities." The new bill will replace three existing laws: Indian Electricity Act, 1910; the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948; and the Electricity Regulatory Commission Act, 1998.
