Wanted: fire-proof data storage system for ONGC

Vol 4, PW 20 (08 Nov 00) News in Brief

A team from ONGC is in Houston exploring modern data storage systems to avoid a repeat of the devastating fire that gutted sections of its Institute of Oil & Gas Production Technology in Mumbai.

The five-man team is in Houston for a month of talks with a number of oil companies and service contractors that have full-proof data storage systems. On 30th August, fire ripped through the institutes first floor, destroying valuable ONGC data, causing damage worth an estimated $2.2m.

Initial reports said a short circuit was to blame. ONGC has set up an internal committee to examine how the fire alarm system failed to detect the blaze.
