India's prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee tells parliament he is confident Bangladesh will export its gas to India.

"The Prime Minister of Bangladesh is very keen on the proposal," Vajpayee told India's upper house on 4th May, "Consultations are at advanced stage and there could be some agreement with that country." Vajpayee's surprise announcement came as oil minister Ram Naik had just finished telling an opposition MP that Bangladesh is not willing to sell gas to India and has not yet made up its mind on the issue. Naik was answering question about domestic gas availability in the Krishna Godavari basin.
