Future imports of LNG, coal and petroleum products to Tamil Nadu were given a boost 1st February when prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee formally commissioned the country's first ever private port.

Ennore Port is the only port in India to operate outside the 'Major Port Trusts Act, 1963'. It can handle traffic of 16m t/y, and is designedfor thermal coal, chemicals, LNG and petroleum products.

Conceived in 1993, Ennore Port has a draft of 15 metres, is protected by northern and southern breakwaters, and has dredged to 15.5 metres " below chart datum". It has three tugs and two pilot launches.

A second phase expansion of three extra coal berths, one LNG terminal, two petroleum oil and lubricant berths and a chemical berth should be ready by March 2004.
