Iranآ’s bizarre offer to sell electricity to India

Iran might be increasingly isolated over its nuclear enrichment programme but that isnt stopping Tehran offering to sell electricity to India.

At first sight the idea looks unworkable but Tehran does not think so. The proposal was first made sometime in September last year to Indias now deceased power minister PM Sayeed.

Says a Tehran source: We offered to set up a power project in Iran to generate electricity from gas and export it to India and Pakistan. We are told there was a preliminary exchange of letters with Indias power ministry and PM Sayeed was to visit Iran to launch a pre-feasibility study for the project.

Iran is already exporting electricity to some Central Asian countries and even Turkey, we are told. Gas is very cheap in Iran and India has a huge shortage of electricity.

Iranian ambassador to Delhi SZ Yaghoubi sent a letter last week seeking a meeting with Sayeeds successor Sushilkumar Shinde to revive this proposal.
