Cairn Energy to deploy two more rigs in Rajasthan

Vol 7, PW 9 (16 Jul 03) News in Brief

Cairn Energy has announced that it will hire two more rigs to drill at its onland Rajasthan exploration block RJ-ON-90/1.

On 9th July, Cairn told the London Stock Exchange that it wants, "two additional medium depth rigs operating (on this block) from September." Cairn also said its RJ-D-1 wildcat exploration well, located on the eastern flank of the block, "has been plugged and abandoned as a dry hole". Added Cairn: "The well, which was located approximately 33-km south-east of the Saraswati field, reached a total depth of 2,540 metres." This well, said Cairn, is part of an "extensive multi-well exploration and appraisal drilling programme." The failure of RJ-D-1 has not disheartened Cairn.

"The deep drilling rig will now be moved to exploration prospect Q, which is located in the centre of the basin approximately 20-km north of Raageshwari and 11-km west of Saraswati." Prospect Q has "multiple objectives" and Cairn wants to drill to a depth of around 3,500 metres.
