BHEL to make electrolysers

Vol 26, PW 9 (20 Apr 23) News in Brief

Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) is planning to manufacture electrolysers and green hydrogen.

On April 15 (2023), Sanghamitra Jayant, deputy general manager in BHEL’s Delhi-based corporate strategic management department, floated a 66-page Request for Proposal (RFP) scouting for a "reputed consultancy" to help BHEL "realise the potential opportunities in electrolyser manufacturing and the green hydrogen value chain." May 8 (2023) is the bid submission deadline.

"The hydrogen economy value chain has been identified as a potential business play for BHEL," adds Sanghamitra. In Phase-1, BHEL wants the consultant to create a strategy and roadmap for electrolyser manufacturing and the entire green hydrogen value chain, including green hydrogen production, storage, transformation, transportation, distribution, and end-use consumption.

Anyone interested in bidding must be ready to suggest Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that can partner with BHEL. "The consulting firm needs to develop a detailed business plan for electrolyser manufacturing till 2040 providing details on financial and technical aspects, the impact of regulations (domestic and global), the impact of the national green hydrogen mission and strategic issues," reads the RFP.

BHEL also wants execution roadmaps for five-year or longer horizons. "We also want the consultant to recommend the location where the electrolyser and green hydrogen production facilities should be," says a BHEL source.

"The location has to be selected strategically from BHEL’s assets." Whoever wins must complete Phase-1 work within ten weeks from the contract award date.

In a February 7 (2023) report titled "Shortage of electrolysers for green hydrogen,’ consulting firm EY highlighted the global increase in production capacity for green hydrogen in the last few months and projected green hydrogen demand to reach 63m t/y by 2030.
