He's clearly the favourite to win, but AJ Morbale faces competition from more than 30 others who applied by the February 12 deadline to become the next ONGC director technology and field services.

Many at ONGC hope executive director Morbale will win after interviews expected in March because he "is a go-getter who takes risks", according to a colleague at the Neelam and Heera Asset. "He gives us a lot of support," says our source.

"That's how we can take quick decisions." This is also Morbale's fourth attempt to get onto the ONGC Board within a year. He competed for the post of chairman but lost to Shashi Shanker in June 2017.

Rajesh Kakkar beat him to win the post of director offshore in October 2017. Morbale also appeared for interviews during the ONGC director onshore selection but lost to SK Moitra last November.

For this post his principal competitors are Arun Jaiswal, group general manager and head of the drilling technology department; NC Pandey, head of the Bokaro CBM asset; Suresh Jandial, HR chief; and Anand Mohan, chief of onshore engineering services. All have similar experience handling technical matters.

Whoever wins will oversee drilling and well services and be responsible for hiring offshore and onshore rigs. This post is vacant since October 1, 2017.
