CBM-IV awards still a mystery

Vol 13, PW 22 (22 Apr 10) News in Brief

Uncertainty continues to surround the fate of seven CBM-IV blocks.

PETROWATCH learns from industry sources that the Empowered Committee of Secretaries (ECS) met on April 14 at an undisclosed location to discuss whether seven CBM blocks should be awarded to Ahmedabad-based Deep Industries. But no conclusion was reached.

“The ECS met to discuss the CBM-IV blocks,” confirms a Shastri Bhawan source. “I don’t know what happened, as the minutes have yet to be finalised.

” However, a regular Shastri Bhawan visitor says the minutes were prepared, but recalled by oil secretary S. Sundareshan on April 20.

DGH sources are also unclear about what exactly is happening. “Please ask the oil ministry,” said a DGH source.

“CBM-IV is not concluded as far as we’re concerned.” Unconfirmed reports suggest the ECS is considering awarding the blocks provisionally won by Deep to the second best bidder in each case (Essar, Arrow) and might ask those companies to match Deep’s bids.
