The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is threatening to cut electricity supplies to the states of Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal unless outstanding dues are paid by a deadline of 1 June.

Rajendra Singh, Chairman, NTPC, cites pressure from the World Bank to recover payments from State Electricity Boards (SEB). Bihar owes NTPC $442m in outstanding dues for 19 months; Uttar Pradesh $498m for 9 months; Delhi $485m for 11 months; and West Bengal $236m for 13 months.

Singh said: "We do not expect states to clear all their dues by June 1 but they should pay a reasonable sum and inform us about their repayment plans.
