Andhra Pradesh has set up an expert panel to suggest ways in which it can benefit from the commercial exploitation of Reliance's offshore deepwater gas find.

T. L Shankar, a respected academic and former government official, famous as the author of the gas pricing formula used in India today, is chair of the panel.

He leads a group of four industry experts in talks with producer and distribution companies Reliance, Cairn Energy, ONGC and GAIL as well as consumers in the fertiliser and power sector. Set up last December, Andhra authorities have asked Shankar's panel to submit a final report by 31st March on the impact of Reliance's find on local industry.

He must also submit an interim report ahead of the final report. On 30th October Reliance announced a 7tcf gas discovery in the Krishna Godavari basin offshore Andhra Pradesh.
