Seniority has won the day in interviews for two IndianOil director posts.

Executive director (ED) Biswapriya Das beat three other IOC colleagues to win the director R&D position after interviews at the PESB on January 29. Das, 57, was chosen over ED Paradip refineries Vijay Prakash, general manager Panipat refinery Debangsu Ray and S.

Venkataramana, director operations at IOC subsidiary Chennai Petroleum. Das is currently ED in the R&D department handling refinery technology.

“We knew Das would win," says an IOC source. "There is no other ED in the R&D department eligible for the post.

Last year he was shifted to R&D by directors to groom him for the post.” Before joining IOC's R&D centre in June 2013, Das headed the Guwahati refinery.

“He is assertive and forceful," says another IOC officer. "We expect he will bring new ideas.

He has spent a lot of time at refineries and can use his knowledge to make the R&D division work.” Das graduated as a chemical engineer from the Birla Institute of Technology & Science at Pilani in Rajasthan and joined IOC in 1980.

If all goes well, he should step into his new role when incumbent RK Malhotra retires on June 30, 2014. Meanwhile, ED Debasis Sen was selected to become the next IOC director business development after PESB interviews on January 24.

Sen manages the marketing of lubes brand SERVO in India and overseas.
