LNG tender at GAIL

Vol 15, PW 19 (05 Apr 12) News in Brief

GAIL ‘closed’ a short-term LNG tender on January 28 to secure 7.5m tonnes of LNG, spread across 12 cargoes in 2013.

GAIL plans to bring in a standard-sized cargo (138,000-cubic metres) every month. Among LNG suppliers who participated in the tender are Gazprom, BG, RasGas, Nigeria LNG, Mitsubishi and Houston-based Excelerate Energy.

GAIL expects to receive the cargoes at Petronet-LNG’s 10m t/y Dahej terminal in Gujarat, the soon-to-be-commissioned 5m t/y Dabhol LNG terminal in Maharashtra owned by GAIL and NTPC joint venture Ratnagiri Gas and Power, or the 5m t/y Kochi LNG terminal, scheduled for commissioning later this year. GAIL is also looking into buying 2m t/y of LNG under a three-year deal for Dabhol, likely to be firmed up by June 2012.

Last December, GAIL signed a 20-year deal with US-based Cheniere Energy for 3.5m t/y of LNG from 2017. In June 2011, GAIL signed a MoU with Gazprom, Singapore for 2.5m t/y for 25 years.
