No new closing date for ONGC's rig tender

Vol 10, PW 20 (08 Feb 07) News in Brief

ONGC is yet to announce a fresh bid closing date for its long-pending tender to charter hire two new-built jack-up rigs for five years each from pre-monsoon 2009.

The tender documents were sold from 31st August to 29th September 2006 and a pre-bid meeting was held in Mumbai on 6th October. ONGC wanted bids in by 7th November.

However, this closing date was extended to 15th December. Two days before this deadline, ONGC told potential bidders that the date was being postponed and the new date would be released soon.

So far, there’s been no news from ONGC, prompting speculation that the tender will be scrapped. An industry source, however, says that ONGC “was probably trying to understand how the market will be around 2009 and beyond for five years.

â€‌ Some 21 companies are learnt to have bought the tender documents, among them Essar Oil, Jindal Drilling, Mercator Offshore, Great Eastern, Atwood Oceanics, KCA Deutag and Transocean.
