El Paso examines Kannur power project

Vol 4, PW 6 (26 Apr 00) News in Brief

Houston-based power producer El Paso has begun a due diligence exercise of a proposed 513-MW combined cycle power plant at Kannur in Kerala.

On 30th August last year Enron pulled out of the Kannur project - promoted by the local KPP Nambiar Group - following objections from the local Communist state government. Before Enron, PSEG Global - another Houston-based power company - also quit the project because of delay in implementation.

El Paso has a 26% stake in a joint venture company behind the 330-MW gas based power project at Pillaiperumal Nallur (PPN). It is understood El Paso wants to step up its operations in India.
