Girish Chaturvedi retires on January 31

Vol 16, PW 7 (18 Oct 12) News in Brief

Only four months remain before oil secretary Girish Chandra Chaturvedi retires aged 60.

This is leading to intense speculation about who might replace him. Additional secretary Sudhir Bhargava, 57, is the name on everybody’s lips.

Next month (November) Bhargava can expect to be ‘empanelled’ or provisionally promoted to secretary, paving the way for a seamless transition. “Bhargava will first become a special secretary before being appointed secretary,” explains a source.

Bhargava was actually due for promotion last month (September), along with all other bureaucrats who joined the IAS in 1979, but this was delayed for reasons unknown. “All IAS officers from Bhargava’s year will be appointed as secretaries in January or February,” we hear.

That will be just in time, as Chaturvedi is set to retire on January 31. Bhargava joined the civil service from Rajasthan and has been at the ministry since March 1, 2010.

Chaturvedi has been there since May 4, 2011.
