GAIL promises new 570-km pipeline for Kerala

GAIL has signed a gas marketing MoU with the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) for the development of a new 570-km gas pipeline network with an initial capacity of 10m cubic metres a day (cm/d), rising to 20m cm/d.

A GAIL statement on 3rd February said the pipeline network, costing Rs1,700cr ($374m), and an LNG terminal at Cochi, costing approximately Rs2,000cr ($440m), would be completed by October 2004. GAIL said it has signed MoUs for the supply of Cochi gas with Kannur Power Projects, Siasin Energy, DC Power and Kasargod.

Jiji Thomson, Managing Director of KSIDC, said the National Thermal Power plant at Kayankulam and plants belonging to Bombay Suburban Electricity Supply, and Fertilisers and Chemicals of Travancore, could use Cochi gas.
