ONGC will launch its deepwater drilling programme on 30th November when Dolphin Drilling's drillship Belford Dolphin will spud the first well at Prospect A in deepwater block GK-DW-1 offshore Gujarat.

ONGC tells us Belford Dolphin will sit in water depths of 1,800 metres and drill to a target depth of 3,300 metres during a 45-60 day drilling programme. ONGC expects Transocean drillship Discoverer Seven Seas to spud its first deepwater well in Indian waters towards the end of January.

ONGC has hired Belford Dolphin and DiscovererSeven Seas for three years each to drill a total of 37 deepwater wells on ONGC blocks and not on joint venture blocks. On 29th September, ONGC sent draft contracts to Dolphin and Transocean.

"The formal contracts will be signed in about a couple of weeks." The effective date for both contracts is 1st August when ONGC issued a 'Letter of Intent' to each company.
