If you believe rumours in Delhi former oil minister Captain Satish Sharma is set to return to his old job.

Sharma was minister of state in the oil ministry between January 1993 and May 1996 and stoked controversy for his decision to sell the Panna, Mukta and Tapti oilfields to Enron and Reliance. His nomination this week for a seat in Indias upper house has sparked rumours thathe will be rewarded with the oil ministers job.

Sharma's friendship with the Nehru-Gandhi family began when he and former PM Rajiv Gandhi were pilots with Indian Airlines. Sharmaremained close to the family after Rajiv's death andvacated his safe seat in Amethi forRajiv's sonRahul during elections.

His loyalty has paid off with Sonia Gandhi insisting he be nominated to the upper house. Observers predict Sharma will soon be given a ministerial job - possibly as oil minister.

Present oil minister Mani Shankar Aiyar has hinted he is holding the job temporarily.
