Ajay Khandelwal's future at Reliance

Vol 19, PW 21 (30 Jun 16) News in Brief

There's growing disquiet within the upper echelons of Reliance over the performance of its E&P head Ajay Khandelwal, according to three company insiders.

"Senior management isn't happy with Ajay," we hear. "He hasn't lived up to expectations." Another source adds Khandelwal has neither the depth nor authority to deal with the complex issues facing Reliance in its legal battles with the government.

"Most of the cases against the government began before he (Ajay) joined," we hear. "Only (oil and gas president) PMS Prasad has enough authority to take decisions on these matters." With rumours rife Prasad will return to take more responsibility, insiders suggest Khandelwal should stick to attending conferences, forums or ministry and DGH meetings to discuss work programmes and budgets.

Khandelwal's operational E&P experience to deal with D6 and other Reliance assets is also in question. "Ajay's knowledge of field development is limited," we hear.

"There are more competent people in Reliance who can better manage those activities."
