'We want to drill deeper in Cambay' says ONGC

Vol 19, PW 20 (16 Jun 16) Exploration & Production

Until now ONGC has tapped mainly shallower prospects in the Cambay basin but it now wants to go deeper to boost production at its Mehsana, Ahmedabad, Cambay, and Ankleshwar assets.

ONGC group general manager Arun Kumar, who took charge as Western Onshore basin manager on June 1, tells this report ONGC has set aside Rs500cr ($75m) to drill 25 exploratory wells in Gujarat under a campaign slated to begin by end-2018. Seven wells each will be drilled at Mehsana, Ahmedabad and Ankleshwar and the remaining four at Cambay which in 2013-14 was upgraded to full 'asset' status from 'sub-asset' attached to Ankleshwar.

"Our priority will be deeper 'pays'," confirms Kumar. "But we'll also target shallow 'pays'." Kumar adds ONGC will target shallow depths from 1000 to 2500 metres and deeper depths between 2000 and 4000 metres.

Most likely, he says, ONGC will use an in-house rig but it might also issue a tender to hire rigs. But first, says Kumar, it will identify locations from a seismic survey for which bids were received earlier this year with contract award slated for October 2016 so the survey can begin by December 2016 and be completed by June 2018.

"We've done seismic at all these four assets before," says Kumar. "But this survey will focus on deeper pays." Kumar refuses to share details about the number of bids received or other details on the seismic survey.
