Shenoy surprise choice as HPCL refineries boss

Two new directors are joining Hindustan Petroleum's newly-appointed chairman Mukesh Surana on the Board from November 1.

They are S. Jeyakrishnan who replaces YK Gawali as director marketing and Vinod Sadanand Shenoy who replaces BK Namdeo as director refineries.

Jeyakrishnan's selection by the PESB after interviews on March 28 was widely expected - he is already ED direct sales and director marketing is a logical career progression. But everybody is speechless over how general manager Shenoy leapfrogged his ED boss Ganesh Gandham to win the director refineries job after PESB interviews on April 5.

Gandham is head of the Vizag refinery and HPCL insiders felt it was inevitable he would get the job despite competition from six other company candidates. Gandham's main competition came from fellow executive director VVR Narasimham, head of health, safety and environment.

Both retire in 2019 but Gandham was believed to have the best chance because he came second when the PESB chose Namdeo as director refineries in December 2012. Similar is the story of K.

Murali who was earlier selected for the job. "He came second in two previous interviews for the same post," says an HPCL source, "Gandham was expected to come first this time." Another company source adds it is awkward for an executive director when someone reporting to him becomes his boss.
